Piloting a private aircraft is as close as man can come to flying like a bird, breaking the bond of gravity, and moving with freedom through the air. It’s also a great way to travel and avoid the annoyances of car travel. And it’s fast—light airplanes travel at speeds of 120 to 250 miles per hour. Since powered flight was first achieved in 1903, human ingenuity and determination has so greatly evolved the airplane, airports, and navigation electronics, that an airplane has become a safe and efficient way to travel. Most pilots flying small to medium-sized aircraft are licensed as private pilots. Redtail Air’s FAA-certified instructors at Canyonland’s Field north of Moab will introduce you to the joy of flying and guide you each step of the way to earning your private pilot license. It is a journey that will provide a lifetime of new experiences and challenges.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM FLIGHT INSTRUCTION
On the first day of flight instruction, you will actually fly! You will be in the pilot seat of one of Redtail’s Cessna 172’s, a four-place, single-engine, high-wing aircraft. The 172 is one of the most popular aircraft ever produced and is not only a good training platform but is a great airplane to fly after receiving your license.
A Private Pilot license requires a minimum of 40 hours of flight time, which includes 20 hours of instruction. This can be completed in about six months, depending on the amount of time a person has available to invest in flying. A typical one-on-one lesson with a Redtail instructor includes 30 minutes of “ground school,” then an hour or so of flying the airplane, followed by a 30-minute debriefing to discuss what you learned.
Once you have your license, you will have it for life. Every two years you will take a flight review with your instructor to insure that you are current and maintaining proficiency. You will continue to perfect and enjoy your flying skills for the rest of your flying career. If you are interested in more advanced certifications, Redtail’s experienced instructors can provide the flight instruction necessary for obtaining your Commercial Pilot License as well as an Instrument Rating.

COMMON FLIGHT INSTRUCTION & PILOT LICENSE QUESTIONS
FLIGHT INSTRUCTION TO LICENSED PILOT STEPS
- Starting you will fly with your instructor for a minimum of one hour per lesson. These lessons will be once a day, once a week, or when you can fit them in.
- Typical students who fit their lessons into a busy schedule can get their private pilot license within a year.
- After approximately 10 hours of flight time &/or when your instructor feels you are ready, you will begin flying solo.
- When your instructor feels you are ready, they will recommend you for a flight test given by an FAA certified check airman.
- Upon completion of this 1 to 2 hour check flight, you will be a licensed private pilot; a privilege you will have for a lifetime.
IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT?
You must be 16 years of age to be issued a Student Pilot Certificate and 17 years of age to be issued a Private Pilots License. There is no upper age limit to become a Pilot.
DO I HAVE TO TAKE A MEDICAL EXAM?
If you are a first-time pilot, you are required to have a medical examination by a certified aviation physician. Find an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) | Federal Aviation Administration (faa.gov).
WHAT IF I WANT TO FLY FOR THE AIRLINES?
Getting your private pilot’s license is a necessary first step for all pilots unless you go through military flight training. As you build hours, you can add a Commercial Pilot license, an Instrument rating and often a Flight Instructor license. Typically the airlines require 1,500 hours of flight time to be considered as a first officer or pilot.
IS IT HARD TO NAVIGATE AROUND THE COUNTRY?
GPS has greatly simplified the task of navigating from one location to another by air. For the most part, you have the freedom to go from your home base to a destination in a straight line (Direct to). Today’s aviation GPS units, either installed in the aircraft or portable, have excellent graphics and maps built in.
CAN I TAKE MY FRIENDS AS A STUDENT PILOT?
As a student pilot you are not licensed to carry passengers. Once you have your Private Pilot license you can carry passengers with you.
AFTER I GET MY PRIVATE PILOT LICENSE, DO I HAVE TO RENEW IT PERIODICALLY?
Your license is good for life. Every two years, you will take a flight review with an instructor of your choice. It is not a pass/fail exam but rather a refresher which you will find valuable in maintaining your piloting skills
CAN I ADD TO MY SKILLS WITH ADDITIONAL LICENSES AND RATINGS?
Flying is a skill that can be continuously perfected over a lifetime. You can add a Commercial pilot rating, a rating to fly on instruments, a license to fly multi-engine airplanes, a license to fly sea planes, and on and on
